How capacitive works

A flush front face, and a thinner product

A capacitive panel is a glass or film sensor laminated to a cover glass. Your finger changes the capacitance of the ITO pattern, and the controller reports the position over USB, I2C or RS232. There is no frame standing above the surface, so the front of your product is a single sheet of glass.

  • Flush, edge-to-edge front — the design reason most builders choose it
  • 2–4 mm thinner than an infrared frame equivalent
  • AG / AR / AF coatings available on the cover glass
  • Lower cost than infrared below roughly 32 inch

The trade-offs: it needs a conductive stylus or a finger (not a gloved hand), it is harder outdoors, and above 43 inch the yield curve makes it expensive. For those cases see infrared frames.

Large format panels

Made to order, 2–3 week lead time. Above 49 inch the price per square metre climbs sharply, so these sizes are quoted per project rather than from a table.

Above 49 inch: we will usually quote an infrared frame instead, and explain why. Single-sheet capacitive beyond 55 inch is possible but the yield penalty is real — expect $600–$1,200 for a 65" panel and a 4–5 week lead time.
Options

What you can change on a standard panel

Cover glass

1.1 / 1.8 / 2.0 / 3.0 mm, chemically strengthened, 6H. Thicker glass needs a higher-sensitivity controller — we test the stack before quoting.

Coating

Clear, AG anti-glare, AR anti-reflective, AF anti-fingerprint. AG costs about 8 % extra and is worth it on any product used near a window.

Interface

USB HID, I2C or RS232. USB is the default; I2C is for embedded boards; RS232 still shows up in industrial retrofits.

FPC exit

Left, right, top or bottom, with same-side or opposite-side contact. Free to specify at the drawing stage, expensive to change later.

Printed border

Black is standard. White, colour, or a border width down to 6 mm. This is the part customers see, so it is worth getting right.

Bonded module

Add the LCD and we bond the panel to it optically — OCA, water glue or air gap. See the module line.

Range in plain terms

Capacitive touch screens, capacitive touch TP, and custom outlines

A capacitive touch screen, a capacitive touch panel and a capacitive touch TP are the same purchase on this site: cover glass, ITO sensor, FPC tail and a matched controller. TP is simply the industry shorthand for touch panel and it survives in plenty of drawings. None of the three includes an LCD — that is the module line, where we bond the panel to your panel.

All of them are PCAP — projected capacitive — which describes the sensing method rather than a different product. A grid of ITO electrodes sits behind the glass and the controller measures the change in capacitance when a finger approaches. No pressure, no coating on the front, no moving parts.

Custom capacitive touch panels are the normal order, not the exception. The outline, the active area, the printed border width, the glass thickness and the tail exit are all set at the drawing stage, and the sensor is re-laid to match. If you already buy glass or a housing, send those dimensions instead of a diagonal — matching an existing part is faster than quoting from scratch. Custom panels →

Capacitive touch applications cluster where the front face has to be flush glass: self-service kiosks, industrial HMI, medical and laboratory instruments, POS terminals and portrait retail signage. Where the environment is gloved, wet or sunlit, the same job usually goes to an infrared frame instead — six application notes →

FAQ

Capacitive panel questions

What is the difference between G+G and G+FF?
G+G uses a glass sensor and gives better optical clarity and a flatter surface — it is what you want for a front-facing product with a printed border. G+FF uses a film sensor, is thinner and cheaper at larger sizes, and is more forgiving on a slightly curved or uneven housing. Below 15 inch the price difference is small; above 32 inch it becomes the main cost driver.
Why do you need three dimensions instead of one?
A capacitive panel is not just a diagonal. The OD is the outside of the glass, the VA is the visible/active area, and the sensor is the ITO pattern inside it. Your housing is cut to the OD, your UI is designed to the VA, and the sensor has to sit inside the printed border. Give us one of the three and we derive the others — but if your housing already exists, the OD is the number that matters.
Can the panel work through 3 mm glass?
Yes, up to about 4 mm with a high-sensitivity controller, but the signal margin drops and you lose the ability to use a passive stylus. Above 2 mm we normally recommend an on-cell or a boosted-sensitivity controller, and we test the exact stack before quoting.
Do you supply the LCD as well?
For bonded modules, yes — see our touch display module line. For a bare touch panel we supply only the touch layer, because most builders already have an LCD source and prefer to keep that relationship.
